This is how a Multi drug resistance “Super bug” is born

Imagine being sick at hospital with a bacterial infection and doctors being unable to stop it from spreading. This might remind you of  one of the scenes from a superbug related sci-fi movies. But in reality the so-called “superbug” is affecting millions of people worldwide.

Superbugs as we know it is scary and it is coined as the bacteria which cannot be killed by all antibiotics.But to be more precise superbugs are multidrug-resistant bacteria.And it is not necessary that they can resistant to all antibiotics. It refers to bacteria that can’t be treated using two or more. Any species of bacteria can be a superbug!

This above video was released by Harvard Medical School and it shows how a bacteria evolves and mutation occurs which makes them resistant to multiple drugs.The experiment was done using a 2-by-4-foot petri dish, which is knows as  Microbial Evolution and Growth Arena (MEGA).  14 liters of agar (a seaweed-derived jellylike substance which is used to nourish organisms) was added in the petridish along with the antibiotics. . The antibiotics in the agar had pattern of stripes. The stripes on the end side of the MEGA had no antibiotics and those in the middle had more. It was increasing up to 1000 times with the course of all the stripes. Then the most  common species of bacteria- E. coli was added to the sides where there is no antibiotics. And it does something horrifying: It actually adapts itself .

The main inspiration of the video was from a movie Contagion(2011) where superbug adaptation is shown. This movie was highly admired for its accuracy and its marketing materials. This made the Researchers at Havard realise that they did not have good visualization of actual spread and adaptation of superbug, and the video was made.

“Seeing is believing” and with that,this strong illustration shows how a bacteria can easily resist antibiotics due to mutation and its evolution.
