Top 10 Biotech Universities and Colleges in India

Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India recently released their National Institutional Ranking Framework’s list for 2018 which ranks the higher education institutes of India. The ministry does not rank the colleges based on their biotechnology curriculum, so we looked at the list of highest ranked engineering colleges and listed the ones with the best Biotechnology curriculum.

Best Biotech Colleges and Universities in India

Below is the list of best biotech universities and colleges in India that offer biotechnology degree.

1.Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

Government Score: 88.95

IIT Madras has been the highest ranked engineering college for three years in a row, 2016-2018. At the undergraduate level, the Department of Biotechnology offers two dual-degree programs: BS/MS in Biosciences and B.Tech./M.Tech. in Biological Engineering. The department also offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, as well as M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering.

2. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay

Government Score: 84.82

IIT Bombay is a public engineering college, and the fifth-oldest in the IIT system. Their Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering currently offer M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.Tech Biomedical Engineering, integrated M.Sc.–Ph.D., and a Ph.D. program.

3. Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur

Government Score: 75.24

IIT Kanpur is a public engineering college, and one of the first colleges in the IIT system. It has its own airfield available to students for flight testing and gliding. Their department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering currently offers a B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences and Bioengineering.

4. Anna University, Chennai

The first university to appear on this list that is not a part of the IIT system – Anna University is a state-run technical university. Its Department of Biotechnology offers B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D. in Industrial Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Technology and Food Technology.

5. Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore

VIT

Government Score: 57.02

VIT is a private engineering college and unlike most colleges, they require students to go through their own entrance exams known as VIT Engineering Entrance Exams (VITEEE). Their School of Bio Science & Technology offers a B.Tech, M.Tech, and M.Sc. in Biotechnology as well as M.Sc in Biomedical Genetics.

6. National Institute of Technology, Warangal

Government Score: 51.82

NIT Warangal is a public engineering college and the first college in the NIT college system. Their Department of Bio-Technology offers a B.Tech. and Ph.D. in Biotechnology.

7. Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal

Government Score: 46.66

MIT is a private engineering college and a constituent institute of Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Their Department of Biotechnology offers a B.Tech. in Biotechnology. They have a separate Department of Biomedical Engineering that offers a B.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering.

8. Delhi Technological Institute, New Delhi

Government Score: 46.57

DTU is one of the oldest engineering colleges in India. Department of Biotechnology offers a B.Tech. in Biotechnology, and M.Tech. in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology.

9. SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Chennai

Government Score: 45.51

The Department of Biotechnology, School of Biosciences offers a B.Tech. and M.Tech. in Biotechnology. They offer a “Twinning Programme” which allows students two complete two years of B.Tech. from SRM, followed by a year of studies at an overseas university that will grant them a B.S. in Biotechnology.

10. Motilal Nehru National University of Technology, Allahabad

MNNIT Allahabad is a part of the NIT college system. Their Department of Biotechnology offers a B.Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D. in Biotechnology.
